If you are comparing Cynosure
The question is not which laser is better. It is how many treatments one purchase has to cover.
At £30,000 to £200,000, nobody buys a system from a search result. You will shortlist, you will see two or three demonstrated, and you will build the commercial case before you sign anything.
So this page does not tell you what another manufacturer's system does. We do not publish their specifications and we will not assert them — ask them directly, and hold their answers next to ours. What this page gives you is Sciton's own published position, the six questions that actually decide a platform purchase, and an offer to demonstrate the platform in your clinic against whatever else is on your list.
Sciton hand-builds its platforms in Palo Alto and publishes that 95% of the systems it has sold are still in clinical use. In the UK, JOULE is sold, installed, trained and serviced by a Sciton UK team you can put a name to.
What to compare
Six questions to put to every manufacturer on your list.
Including us. If a supplier cannot answer these in writing before the demo, that is itself an answer.
-
01
How many treatments run from one chassis?
A single-application device earns from one line on your price list. Count the indications the system covers today, not the ones the brochure implies.
-
02
What does the next indication cost?
Ask whether a new modality is a module on the platform you already own, or a second capital purchase with its own footprint, training and service contract.
-
03
What is the consumable cost per treatment?
Tips, gels, cartridges and filters are the line that quietly decides your margin. Ask for the twelve-month figure at your expected volume, not the unit price.
-
04
Which skin types can you treat, and at what settings?
A UK patient list is not Fitzpatrick I–III. If darker skin types come with caveats, you need those caveats before you buy, not after.
-
05
Who installs, trains and services it here?
Ask where the engineer is based, what the response time is, where parts ship from, and what a week of downtime does to your treatment diary.
-
06
What is it worth in five years?
Ask how many systems of that generation are still in clinical use, and whether the platform can be upgraded rather than replaced when the range moves on.
Side by side
Sciton's column is Sciton's own published specification. The other column is left as the question to put to whoever else you are considering — we would rather you got that answer from them, in writing, than took our version of it. Bring both to the demo.
| Criterion |
Sciton JOULE®
|
The competitor |
|---|---|---|
| Treatments from one chassis | Skin resurfacing, pigmentation, vascular, hair removal, acne and skin tightening | How many of these run from the chassis itself, without a second system in the room? |
| Modules available | 11 modules to choose from | How many modalities can be added to this platform, and which are available in the UK today? |
| Technologies on the platform | Er:YAG 2940 nm, 1470 nm, 1927 nm, 1064 nm and 532 nm, plus BBL® broadband light, depending on configuration | Which wavelengths are on the chassis, and which need a different box? |
| Skin types | HALO® treats Fitzpatrick I–VI; ProFractional® and OMNI® treat all skin types | Which Fitzpatrick types are on label, and what changes in the protocol for IV–VI? |
| Consumable cost | OMNI has no consumable cost per treatment — the Spritz cooling step replaces the gel | What is the disposable cost per treatment, and what does that come to over twelve months at your volume? |
| Upgrade path | Add a module to the JOULE you already own — same chassis, same room, same service contract | Is the next modality an upgrade, or a second capital purchase? |
| Delivery in the UK | Sold, installed, trained and serviced by Sciton UK | Who installs and services it, where are the engineers based, and where do parts ship from? |
| Longevity | 95% of Sciton lasers are still in use today | How many systems of this generation are still in clinical use, and what is the resale market like? |
| Return | JOULE owners average 3× their monthly lease payment | What utilisation and pricing does the supplier's own return figure assume? |
Sciton column: specifications and figures as published by Sciton. Individual clinic performance varies with case mix, pricing and utilisation. This table does not state, and Sciton does not publish, any other manufacturer's specifications — the right-hand column is a question for you to put to them. All trade marks are the property of their respective owners.

The commercial case
The cheaper system is the one that earns from more of your consultation list.
Purchase price is the easiest number to compare and the least useful one. What decides whether a platform pays is how much of the demand walking through your door it can serve, and how much the second and third indication cost to add.
A single-application device earns from one line on the price list. A modular platform earns from several, and each module you add reuses training, floor space and a service contract you have already paid for.

Switching platform
Already own a system? Here is what changing actually involves.
Most of the clinics we speak to are not buying their first laser. They are deciding what to do at the end of a warranty, a lease or a service contract — and the honest answer is that the disruption is usually smaller than the spreadsheet suggests.
Your UK specialist will work through the whole of it before you commit: what your existing system is worth and whether it can be part-exchanged, how the install fits around your treatment diary, how long your team needs on training before they are treating unsupervised, what the service contract covers, and which finance or lease structure suits the way the clinic is funded.
Who may operate a Class IV laser in your clinic, and under what supervision, is set by your registration and your local authority licensing. That gets worked through alongside the training plan rather than after it.
