If you are comparing platforms

The real question is not which box to buy. It is how many boxes you end up with.

Most clinics do not set out to own four systems. They buy one for the treatment in demand this year, then buy again when the next indication arrives — and end up with four service contracts, four training curves and four things to find room for.

This page does not tell you what another manufacturer's system does. We do not publish their specifications and we will not assert them — ask them directly, in writing, and hold their answers next to ours. What we give you is Sciton's own published position and the six questions that decide whether a platform keeps earning after the treatment that justified it goes out of fashion.

Sciton hand-builds its platforms in Palo Alto and publishes that 95% of the systems it has sold are still in clinical use. In the UK, JOULE is sold, installed, trained and serviced by a Sciton UK team you can put a name to.

Sciton platform in a clinic treatment room

Light and laser, one chassis

Broadband light for the volume work. Lasers for everything it cannot reach.

Clinics comparing intense-light systems are usually solving for throughput: pigmentation, vascular concerns, acne and hair reduction across large areas, delivered by a team member rather than the practice owner. BBL® HEROic™ is Sciton's answer to that — automated pulse placement, full-body areas in minutes, delegatable to staff of any experience level.

What changes the commercial picture is that the same chassis also takes lasers. Er:YAG resurfacing at 2940 nm, non-ablative work at 1470 nm and 1064 nm, 1927 nm for prejuvenation, 532 nm for vessels. Broadband light and laser are configured on one platform, in one room, on one service contract — rather than bought as separate systems eighteen months apart.

That is the whole argument. Not that any single wavelength is better, but that a clinic buying one wavelength at a time pays for the chassis, the training and the floor space every time.

What to compare

Six questions to put to every manufacturer on your list.

Including us. Ask all of them the same six, in writing, before anyone demonstrates anything.

  • 01

How many wavelengths are on the chassis?

Count what the system delivers today, in nanometres. A platform sold on one or two wavelengths is a platform you will be adding to.

  • 02

Do light and laser run from the same system?

Broadband light covers the volume work; lasers cover what it cannot reach. If they need two systems, you are buying two of everything around them.

  • 03

What does the next indication cost?

Ask whether a new modality is a module on the platform you already own, or a second capital purchase with its own footprint, training and service contract.

  • 04

What is the consumable cost per treatment?

Tips, gels, cartridges and filters are the line that quietly decides your margin. Ask for the twelve-month figure at your expected volume, not the unit price.

  • 05

Who installs, trains and services it here?

Ask where the engineer is based, what the response time is, where parts ship from, and what a week of downtime does to your treatment diary.

  • 06

What is it worth in five years?

Ask how many systems of that generation are still in clinical use, and whether the platform can be upgraded rather than replaced when the range moves on.

Side by side

Sciton's column is Sciton's own published specification. The other column is left as the question to put to whoever else you are considering — we would rather you got that answer from them, in writing, than took our version of it. Bring both to the demo.

The commercial case

One platform that keeps earning beats four that each earn once.

Purchase price is the easiest number to compare and the least useful one. What decides whether a system pays is how much of the demand walking through your door it can serve, and what the second and third indication cost to add.

A single-application device earns from one line on the price list. A modular platform earns from several, and each module you add reuses training, floor space and a service contract you have already paid for.

Switching platform

Already own two or three systems? That is the conversation to have.

Consolidating onto one platform is usually a better discussion than replacing like for like. It frees a treatment room, removes a service contract or two, and puts your team on one interface instead of three.

Your UK specialist will work through the whole of it before you commit: what your existing systems are worth and whether they can be part-exchanged, how the install fits around your treatment diary, how long your team needs on training before they are treating unsupervised, what the service contract covers, and which finance or lease structure suits the way the clinic is funded.

Who may operate a Class IV laser in your clinic, and under what supervision, is set by your registration and your local authority licensing. That gets worked through alongside the training plan rather than after it.

Frequently asked questions

No. Sciton is an independent manufacturer and Sciton UK is its UK distributor. Those names appear on this page only to identify the systems a clinic may be comparing, and all trade marks are the property of their respective owners. Nothing on this page states another manufacturer's specifications — where you see a question in the comparison table, that is a question for you to put to them.

There is no single list price. JOULE is configured around the modules you specify, so the figure depends on which applications you want on day one, the warranty term and whether you buy outright or on finance. Tell us what your treatment list looks like and we will send an itemised quotation with finance options the same working day.

BBL is Sciton's broadband light technology. Rather than compare it to anyone else's device, the useful question is what it delivers: BBL HEROic uses automated pulse placement to cover full-body areas in minutes, for pigmentation, vascular concerns, acne and hair reduction, and it is designed to be delegated to a trained team member. Ask any supplier for treatment time on a defined area, the consumable cost of that treatment, and which Fitzpatrick types are on label — then compare the three answers.

Ask your UK specialist — what an existing system is worth depends on the make, the age, the hours on it and its service history, so it is quoted case by case rather than from a table. If you are consolidating two or three systems onto one platform, raise it early: it usually changes the finance conversation more than any discount would.

Yes, and that is planned in rather than bolted on. Sciton UK provides applications training at install and follow-up sessions once the treatments are running. Consolidating onto one platform usually reduces the training burden rather than adding to it, because the modules share one interface — learning the second module is not learning a second machine.

Sciton UK sells, installs, trains and services in the UK. Ask us for the current response commitment, where the engineers are based and where parts ship from — and ask everyone else on your shortlist the same three questions, because downtime on a Class IV platform is lost treatment revenue, not an inconvenience.

JOULE takes modules for resurfacing, pigmentation, vascular, hair removal, acne and skin tightening — 11 in total. Adding one uses the chassis, the room, the training and the service contract you already have, which is the whole argument for a modular platform over a series of single-purpose devices.

A UK specialist brings the platform to your clinic, treats the skin types and concerns your consultations actually stall on, and works through settings, downtime and the commercial case with you. If you have other systems on the shortlist, bring their answers to the six questions and we will go through them line by line — including the ones that are awkward for us.
